Security Council condemns looting of UN premises in Sudan’s Darfur

The Security Council on Tuesday strongly condemned the looting of the Headquarters of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

In press statement the Security Council has demanded the Sudanese authorities to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of all UNAMID sites in Darfur, to swiftly investigate these incidents, and to bring all perpetrators of these acts to justice.

The members of the Council stressed that attacks against UN premises and personnel are reprehensible and unacceptable.

During the forceful intrusion into the UNAMID camp in El Geneina on May 14, UN property and contingent-owned equipment were looted, premises vandalized and the lives of UN staff and personnel put at grave risk, said the statement.

For its part, the Government of West Darfur condemned the incident and called everyone who find the  looted equipment to handed it to the authorities.
