Sudan foils attempt to smuggle 63 immigrants near border with Libya

Sudanese authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle 63 illegal immigrants, including 29 foreigners, in Sudan’s North Darfur State, the official SUNA news agency reported on Saturday.

“The Rapid Support Forces, in coordination with the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), have managed to stop a human smuggling group with 26 Ethiopians and 37 Sudanese,” North Darfur State Governor Abdul-Wahid Yousif told SUNA.

He said the group was stopped at Wady Hawar area near the Sudan-Libya border, reiterating Sudan’s commitment to combat illegal immigration phenomenon.

Sudan has witnessed an increase in organized human trafficking and illegal immigration.

In October 2014, Sudan hosted an international conference on combating human trafficking and illegal immigration which included the participations of African and European countries.

European countries have helped Sudan with air and maritime support on combating multi-national human smugglers.
