Uganda premier league champions Vipers SC played out to a second consecutive 1-1 draw at the ongoing 2018 CECAFA Kagame cup.
After a disappointing draw against Zanzibar’s JKU FC on Friday, Vipers again shared the spoils with defending champions Azam FC (1-1) at the Chamazi stadium on Sunday to take their points tally to two in as many games.
Like it was the case against JKU, the Venoms had to come from a goal down to get a point thanks to last season’s UPL top scorer Daniel Muzei Sserunkuma.
The Tanzanians took the lead on the 22nd minute mark through Shaban Iddi but Sserunkuma was on hand to restore purity for Vipers eight minutes later.
Vipers has now picked two points out of the possible six and will be back in action on Wednesday against South Sudan’s Kator FC.
They now seat third on the four team log in Group B but only need to avoid defeat against the South Sudanese to ensure qualification to the quarter finals.
What they said after the game:
Tadeo Lwanga, Vipers SC captain.
“We played against the defending champions on Sunday which is always tough.
“They were at home too but we tried our best to neutralize them.
“We played well and managed to score but it’s sad that we conceded again.
“This means that we need to win our final game to ensure progression to the next round.
Miguel da Costa, Vipers SC head coach.
“It was a very tough game but getting a draw against the defending champions is very important for us.
“We have a very young team so we are trying to keep in the competition.
“When i look at the games we have played so far, we were far better this time round than in the first game.
“We go into the last match knowing that if we win it, we are through to the next round, continued da Costa.
“If we maintain the same attitude and sort the few issues we had in the last games, we will be able to win and progress.
In the other group B game, Kator lost 2-0 to JKU in the earlier game on Sunday with Nassor Matar and Mussa Abrahaman on target for the islanders.
In group B, Rwanda’s APR rallied from two goals down to make amends and force a draw with Gor Mahia of Kenya.
In group C Simba SC and Singida, two Tanzanian clubs are in the same pool with Rwanda’s APR and Dekedaha FC from Somali.
The event that was last held in 2015 saw Azam beat Gor Mahia in the final 2-0. The top two teams in each group and best two best third placed teams qualify for the quarterfinal.
